Now, your first reaction will probably be: If Dota 2 is to be commercially successful as a Free To Play game, it will have to compete with League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth and I claim that this will require a ranked ladder for both solo and 5v5 queue with visible rating. Now, as for my actual concern – what pick mode should ranked games use? In League of Legends draft pick is used in which a team captain is responsible for bans and then teams alternatingly pick heroes for themselves.
The only pick mode that compares in Dota 2 is the Captain Mode in which a single player is responsible for the picks.
There is no learning process if people are not aiming for it. There are plenty of people which are stagnating below 4, rating after more than 1, games. Which is OK if not aiming to become good and improve. But if you think that you are trying and still there – you are not doing it right. Most players below 4, rating are good at certain fields of the game and bad at others, all the things are easily accessible in internet and no more than hours of learning theory and around another hours of practicing any player could easily achieve 3, , rating.
A bit more or like double would easily get you to 4, rating. That’s why the game is usually perceived as one with slow learning curve. Then again – most of the players as we know statistically are below 3, rating, some of them having more than 2, , 3, and even 4, hours played. Because while a lot of them are not aiming to play better – a lot of them are just plain idiotic and their thinking pattern is at false. Being put in a game with relatively similar skilled players is good, much weaker players will hinder your growth goes both ways and higher players will crush you like a bug, not giving you a chance to learn anything.
In such games having players floating around your skill level – a bit higher, a bit lower is just fine.

Three Lane Highway is Chris’ column about Dota 2. You’re always learning, whether or not it feels like it. I’ve had games of Dota where I’ve felt like I’ve learned nothing at all, where my mistakes have been obvious to me and probably to everybody else involved and my victories have been conducted against enemies too busy screaming at each other or eating paint to make it mean anything. There is always, however, a way to learn.
If you work on your ability to pick apart a situation to understand its various components—which is something I’ve written about in this column before—then it’s possible to derive rules and principles that are tremendously helpful. This is because your performance in Dota is made of up two things. The first is the obvious stuff: The second part is more nebulous, because it’s bound up in things that are personal to you. Whether you have an ego or not.
Whether or not you are calm. Whether you can comprehend and act on criticism. You are always able to work on the latter, and you should, because it’ll make you happier and better at the game. I’ve been playing in a couple of tournaments recently. I’m part of a games industry Dota 2 tournament called The Rektreational that has been running for a couple of months.
Also funny how you say basically the exact same thing as the article, if slightly more furious. Oct 24, at 2: The real trouble with DOTA 2 is the vitriolic community it has. Toraka Oct 24, at 6:

This figure is assumed to be skewed upwards, as it is generally believed that newer and less skilled players are less likely to display their MMR publicly, and therefore are not considered in the data analysis. Uncertainty Uncertainty is the standard deviation of a player’s MMR. Players with high uncertainty are more likely to be matched with players that differ more greatly in skill level, and vice versa.
New accounts with few games played tend to have high uncertainty, while older accounts with many games played tend to have low uncertainty. Since normal and ranked matchmaking are tracked separately, a player who has many normal games will still experience high uncertainty in ranked matchmaking if they have only played a few ranked games, and vice versa.
Higher uncertainty leads to larger MMR adjustments after each match, and lower uncertainty leads to smaller adjustments.
