Relative to the manner of translating the Book of Mormon the prophet himself has said but little. Of the Urim and Thummim he says: After describing the means the prophet employed to exclude the light from the “Seer Stone,” he says: A piece of something resembling parchment would appear, and under it was the interpretation in English. Brother Joseph would read off the English to Oliver Cowdery, who was his principal scribe, and when it was written down and repeated to Brother Joseph to see if it was correct, then it would disappear, and another character with the interpretation would appear. Thus the Book of Mormon was translated by the gift and power of God and not by any power of man. History of the Church Vol. It was first published in the Deseret News of April 13, Bishop Reuben Miller, who was present at the meeting, reported Cowdery’s remarks. He said that the Prophet possessed a “Seer Stone,” by which.

This was from a paper handed to me by a colleague who discovered it by chance several years ago. No author I’m afraid, but it is a fascinating read. In the attention of a number of public spirited citizens and capitalists of Springfield was called to the great advantage which would result to the city from the establishment and conduct of manufacturing industries. Even in those days men who were what we now term promoters were keenly active in various lines, and one of the pioneers in this profession was Mr.
He came to Springfield in and pointed out the benefits to the city, and the very possible and probable profits to be secured for the stockholders, of a company organised for the manufacture of watch movements. Attention was directed to the benefits which would come to the city in the establishment of an industry in which the chief expense of production was the high wages paid to skilled labor and in the bringing to the city of a large number of skilled mechanics and their families.

Rolex Datejust The story of the Rolex watch is inextricably entwined with the story of Hans Wilsdorf, who co-founded and personally drove forward the progress of the company, and the technical developments that led to the public acceptance and expectation of an accurate, waterproof, self winding wristwatch. Many other companies and individuals contributed, and there were waterproof and self winding watches before the Rolex Oyster, but the fact remains than Wilsdorf is an important figure in the story of the modern mechanical wristwatch.

The Watch that Made the Dollar Famous In about , Robert Hawley Ingersoll and his brother Charles Henry, operating in New York as a mail-order business, recognized the need for an inexpensive watch that nearly anyone could afford, to be sold for around one dollar. Both the New Haven Clock Company and the Waterbury Clock company had already produced inexpensive “clock-watches” that could meet the need that Ingersoll anticipated, but they had achieved neither mass-market success nor widespread distribution.
The positive response prompted Ingersoll to return to Chicago for the World’s Fair in , where a new clock-watch with the World’s Fair emblem stamped into the case was a huge success.
The Dollar Watch proved to be so popular that by mid s they had sold one million Dollar Pocket Watches. Ingersoll coined the phrase “The Watch that made the Dollar Famous!”. Other companies that also sold pocket watches costing only one dollar were Westclox, New Haven, Ingraham, and Ansonia.
Long before I had ever written a line for publication, or endeavored to deliver a speech in public, I followed the habit of reshaping my own character, by trying to imitate the nine men whose lives and life-works had been most impressive to me. Just before going to sleep at night, I would shut my eyes, and see, in my imagination, this group of men seated with me around my Council Table. Here I had not only an opportunity to sit among those whom I considered to be great, but I actually dominated the group, by serving as the Chairman.
My purpose was to rebuild my own character so it would represent a composite of the characters of my imaginary counselors. Realizing, as I did, early in life, that I had to overcome the handicap of birth in an environment of ignorance and superstition, I deliberately assigned myself the task of voluntary rebirth through the method here described… In these imaginary Council meetings I called on my Cabinet members for the knowledge I wished each to contribute, addressing myself to each member in audible words, as follows: Emerson, I desire to acquire from you the marvelous understanding of Nature which distinguished your life.
I ask that you make an impress upon my subconscious mind, of whatever qualities you possessed, which enabled you to understand and adapt yourself to the laws of Nature. Also to acquire the spirit of enduring FAITH, which enabled you to turn defeat into victory, and to surmount staggering obstacles. His imaginary meetings became so vivid, in fact, that he discontinued them, so that he would not begin to confuse the workings of his head with reality.
But, Hill said, Lincoln then came to visit him in his sleep, and told him he had a great work to do and not to shirk the duty.

The Dollar Ingersoll Watch took some time to become a reality, but Ingersoll solved the mass production puzzle with the Ingersoll Watch Around the end of the s and maybe even before, pocket watch manufacturing was not the most financialy secure of industries. Pocket watches on the whole were expensive and therefore reserved for the more affluent members of society. Of course, a gentleman of the day would not be seen without his pocket watch – they were very much a status symbol, just like a prestige wrist watch is today.
What pocket watch manufacturers needed was to sell more watches – and to do that they needed to produce them in a much more efficient and cost effective manner, make them accessible to the masses, and therefore make them much cheaper. So the first ideas of producing the so-called “Dollar Watch” was born. One company is famous for the first genuine Dollar watch – Ingersoll.
The Dollar Watch proved to be so popular that by mid s they had sold one million Dollar Pocket Watches. Ingersoll coined the phrase “The Watch that made the Dollar Famous! The RolCo brand name was registered on 15th September and, like Marconi, Unicorn and other brands, was used for watches at lower price points than the top line Rolex branded watches. The image in Jobin shows a basic grade of this movement with no train jewels but with “Bouchons” “dessus” and “dessous” above and below , that is brass bushes instead of jewels in the top and bottom plates.
The RolCo movement is fully jewelled with 15 jewels. Watches with Rolex’s “other brands” on their movements such as Marconi, Unicorn or RolCo, are often described as “Rolex watches”, but this is not what Rolex would have called them. There was often no secret that they were supplied by the Rolex Watch Company, but they were not called or branded Rolex watches, they were called Marconi, Unicorn or RolCo watches by Rolex themselves and if any name appears on the dial it should be the same as the one on the movement.
